Re: Grizzly hunt ban aims at cities (B.C. Views column, Aug. 23)

I wish Tom Fletcher had done more research before writing that the grizzly bear hunting ban is part of an urban wish list.

Province wide, more than 90 per cent of B.C. residents oppose the hunt. The number is higher in cities but even in the Interior where grizzly hunting occurs, 66 per cent of residents oppose the hunt.

There is no good argument for the hunt to continue. First of all shooting them is barbaric.

I have seen these magestic animals in the wild a number of times and I suggest Tom should take a field trip.

Studies show grizzly bears are worth much more alive than dead. Bear watching is part of tourism in this province and is growing rapidly.

Yes, we will have to pay off some guides and outfitters but they can learn to take out bear watchers instead of bear killers.

For what it’s worth, unlike black bears, very few people eat grizzly bears because of the high levels of parasites in the meat.

Never thought I would vote NDP but they have come through with their campaign promise to ban grizzly bear hunting – good on them.
