A grassfire behind St. Anthony’s medical clinic in Langford was likely “human caused,” fire investigators say.
Langford Fire Rescue was called out to a grassy wooded area off Goldstream Avenue, between the professional building and a housing complex Saturday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m.
Firefighters doused a 30 by 50 foot fire slowly spreading over somewhat damp grass and brush. Investigators said there was no evidence of lightning on the bright sunny day, or any other natural cause that would ignite a fire. West Shore RCMP were called in to help with the case.
“It looks like it was human caused,” said Langford fire investigator Chris Aubrey. “It’s a high profile area. We are hoping witnesses saw something.”
Lance Caven, Langford’s other fire investigator, said grassfires in April are rare, especially one of this size.
“If this was summer, it would be a different story,” Caven said. “We haven’t had a long stretch of dry weather so the fire wasn’t spreading as quickly as it would in the summertime.”
