National treasure Colonel Chris Hadfield is due to speak at the Mary Winspear Centre, Tuesday, May 7.

Called “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong,” Hadfield enjoyed a 21-year career as an astronaut, making three spaceflights and orbiting the earth 2,600 times.

On board the International Space Station, Hadfield harnessed modern technology using TV and Twitter to make the wonders of outer space accessible for us terrestrial earthlings.

Hadfield was Canada’s first fully-qualified Space Shuttle crew member, known as a NASA Mission Specialist. Three years later, aboard Shuttle Atlantis, he was the first Canadian to operate the Canadarm in space, and the first Canadian to board a Russian spacecraft as he helped build the Mir space station.

In 2001, Hadfield performed two spacewalks. the first Canadian to do so, and was named Commander of the International Space Station in 2013, again a Canadian first.

During his decorated career, Hadfield has intercepted Soviet bombers in Canadian airspace, travelled to the ocean floor, been NASA’s Director of Operations in Russia and recorded videos from space.

Hadfield’s numerous awards include receiving the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Cross and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He was named the Top Test Pilot in both the US Air Force and the US Navy, and has been inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame.

Hadfield’s career continues to inspire millions, with him recently completing a television series in the UK and his bestselling books, including An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth and You Are Here, continuing to sell well around the world.

Notable Canadian civic honours include being commemorated on Canadian postage stamps, Royal Canadian Mint coins and on Canada’s newest five dollar bill.

Tickets to see Chris Hadfield are $73.50 & $89.25, in the Bodine Family Hall of the Mary Winspear Centre. The talk is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 at 7:30pm.
