An escaped inmate with ties to a West Shore murder has been recaptured.

The Correctional Service of Canada confirmed Saturday that Robert Raymond Dezwaan, 53, has been arrested by Fraser Valley RCMP. The convicted killer went missing from a minimum security unit of the Mission Institution in the central Fraser Valley. Staff discovered he was unaccounted for Friday afternoon.

The Kelowna resident was serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 15 years after being found guilty of strangling 16-year-old Cherish Oppenheim in Merritt, B.C. in 2001 and was convicted of second degree murder.

Dezwaan is the father of Kruse Wellwood, who along with Cameron Moffat was convicted of raping and brutally murdering 18-year-old Langford resident Kimberly Proctor in 2010.

Correctional Service is investigating the circumstances around Dezwaan’s escape.
