Colwood Fire Rescue had a busy Sunday afternoon, responding simultaneously to a small fire at Royal Roads University and a motorcycle crash at the nearby intersection of Sooke Road and Mount View Avenue.

The smoldering fire, reported shortly after 4 p.m. was roughly four feet by seven feet and located near a small paved road, but it took firefighters about an hour to locate it.

“When the smoke lingers in the air it’s kind of hard to pinpoint exactly where it is,” said Assistant Chief Greg Chow. “It was located in some deep brush.”

The fire was extinguished quickly once it was located.

It’s suspected that it was human-caused but the investigation is ongoing.

Chow couldn’t confirm accounts that there was a pile of garbage and clothes in the area, but did say there was a report of someone potentially living in the area. That information has been passed along to campus security.

A representative from Royal Roads wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist sustained non-life threatening injuries following a 4:30 p.m. crash. The crash didn’t involve any other vehicles or individuals and the man was taken to Victoria General Hospital. It’s unknown what caused the crash at this time.

Double and even triple-headers aren’t rare in Colwood, but Chow confirmed that they can be challenging during the summer when the number of calls spike and more crew members take vacation.

“It’s just getting busier and busier and we urge people to pay attention, especially when driving,” Chow said.
