Sun is in the forecast for Canada Day weekend and the City of Colwood has a new offering for kids and their parents.

The splash pad at Colwood Creek Park is the first of its kind for the municipality and communications manager Sandra Russell says that the excitement prior to its official opening was evident.

“I think people are very excited to see it [open]. It’s going to be a great place for kids to go and cool off and there’s a playground right next to it and wide open spaces for kids to run,” she said.

Some landscaping work has also been completed around the park and the splash pad includes jets that come out of the ground and an overhead soaker. Other potential park improvements have been discussed, including public washrooms and a food forest that would allow for people to forage for their own fruits, berries and herbs from a mini-orchard, similar to what the City has started along the recently-opened Painter Trail.

“It’s meant to be a model of local food production and sharing of food. It’s the kind of thing that builds community resilience, especially if there’s ever a food shortage,” Russell said.

The splash pad is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
